HBR: Turning Doctors Into Leaders

Lots of buzz about the article in the most recent issue of Harvard Business Review, “Turning Doctors Into Leaders,” by Thomas Lee, network president of Partners HealthCare System, in Boston, and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Physician leaders who read the article will resonate with the ideas — not much new there. What I am intrigued about, though, is how this “mainstreaming” of the challenges physician leaders face will impact healthcare change. HBR is a business journal, read by leaders of large employer groups. Are they aware of how difficult it is to lead physicians? Will this article give them a feel for the challenge of changing culture and minds? What kind of leverage will they exert? After all, the Leapfrog Group came about as a result of employers groups’ frustration with rising healthcare costs.
It’s worth pondering how business leaders can now catalyze the efforts of physician leaders….
